Inner Work: The Importance of Mantras Outer Work: New Ecommerce Resources by Tydo
Inner Work
I’ve always been into mantras in the general sense. A mantra is a sacred phrase or sentence that you focus your mind on. I used to write ones on my mirror growing up or find cute sayings that inspired me during my tumblr days. But only recently, with the help of my coach, have I started to understand the true power of having a single mantra that you practice saying regularly. Now, I say a phrase around a loop of beads with my eyes closed envisioning a version of myself that I desire. I return to my mantra when I have an ugly, untrue thought pop into my head.
I recently changed my mantra. I had started with one that was very long and specific: “I am a powerful attractor and I radiate good energy. I am a brilliant and articulate leader and I inspire others to practice self-inquiry.” As you can imagine, it was a mouthful. And I started to feel less connected to it with time — I think because of its specificity. I needed to get to the root. So, I worked through it with my coach and found that I envisioned a version of Erin that moved with confidence in the direction of her dreams. She spoke with confidence to others about self-inquiry and the growth mindset that inspires her deeply. She made decisions confidently; feeling good about saying no to time spent that didn’t align with her values and saying yes to the things that would make her light shine brighter. She had an inner knowing that she was living her purpose.
Perfect, I thought. I will make my new mantra, “I am confident.”
Then my coach asked me on a scale of 1-10, how much I’d say I accept myself the way I am right now. I answered shyly, “probably 5.” We then explored the relationship I have between acceptance and my ultimate goal: confidence. I learned that I viewed acceptance as the foundation of confidence. Confidence, in my world view, is ultimate acceptance. Another way of looking at it was that confidence was a 15 on a scale of 1-10 of acceptance. How was I supposed to have confidence if I wasn’t able to accept myself??
As an ambitious individual, (and I have a feeling a lot of WORKWORK readers can relate) it can be really difficult to feel good about where we are currently when we consistently strive for better and greater, especially when it comes to ourselves. We are our own, hardest, critics. It’s why I want to touch on the topic of acceptance + setting goals/manifestation more deeply in the next WORKWORK. Stay tuned.
My new mantra is “I am exactly where I am meant to be.” And wow, do I feel connected to that! When I practice that, I close my eyes saying that phrase over and over while I envision the version of Erin that I described above (probably in a little more detail). I feel comfort knowing that everything that I am today will guide me to that vision. And the best part of having a mantra is that you can turn to it when you inevitably have a hurtful thought pass through your mind that is utterly un-useful or when the goal feels too far away. Anytime I am hard on myself or don’t think I’m good enough, I find peace returning to the thought: “I am exactly where I am meant to be.”
Outer Work
I usually try to stay away from explicitly marketing the things I am working on, but my team interviews really smart and incredible individuals in the eCommerce space. Then we turn it into really useful content. Here are a few recent reports and blog posts that are worth sharing. My personal notes are in italic.
Tydo Tables: The Wild West of CPG (Report)
We went to Austin, TX, and sat down with 14 operators and founders in the CPG space to discuss the challenges and opportunities of CPG brands, specifically. This is the first of our roundtable series where we gather for dinner with niche groups of founders and operators to have a single discussion. We are going to New York next week to have our second conversation with GenZ founders and operators of brands that target a GenZ consumer.
We are hyper-aware that it can be challenging to finance an eCommerce business, let alone how hard it can be during an economic climate like today. That’s why we chatted with finance and VC experts to help bring awareness to the 3 primary forms of alternative lending that brands can consider when looking to support their business financially: Credit Lines, Payments, and Merchant Cash Advances.
Data and analytics are complicated and sometimes it's hard to know what the right definition is for basic terms that can help you make better decisions. We have been creating a glossary of metrics that include definitions and examples in hope of educating and bringing clarity to different terms that eCommerce brands should leverage.
